Daniel Faggard and Martha

According to the information had at Rootsweb Daniel FAGGARD was born abt 1784 in SC and died 15 June 1844 in Citronelle, Mobile, AL.

Daniel was the son of Henry FAGGARD who was born 1760 in SC. This Henry is given as perhaps related to a Valentine FAGGART of NC. Various spellings given are FAGGART, FEGAR and FEGART. The name is said to be French. This Henry is given as having married a Catherine and lived in SC. Daniel and John G. FAGGARD are given as being the two known children. I’ve read that Henry went to AL, that the two sons were in Washington Co., AL, and that while Daniel remained in AL, his brother, John G., born 1802 SC, settled in Jackson Co. MS. after marrying Lucinda DENNY 18 Dec. 1832 in Greene Co. MS. (Source: Rootsweb Dickerston/Langston Family tree)

The Rootsweb Dickerston/Langston Family tree states that Henry FAGGARD received a land grant 1784 in Sumter Co. SC. and that he is in the 1810 Clarendon Co. SC census. I find him in the 1800 census but have yet to locate him in the 1810 Sumter CO. Clarendon Township Census.

A Catherine FAGGARD appears in the 1840 census, given as between 90 and 100 years of age, which would make her born between 1740 and 1750. She is of an age to be the mother of Daniel, but it is unlikely she would be the mother of John G. unless the age in the census is off by a decade.

Daniel FAGGARD is given as marrying Martha, perhaps a sister to Henry WELLS who went to Jackson Co. MS. According to the 1850 census she was born 1779.

The Rootsweb Dickerston/Langston Family tree relates that Daniel D. FAGGARD served in the 1812 wst Reg’t, Means, SC Militia, Servant, Roll Box 69, Roll Exct. 602, and that he was married about 1808 in SC. Daniel and Martha had 8 known children:

  • Henry Wells b. 1809 probably SC married Eva Elizabeth MURRY.
  • Jackson b. 1813 SC married 1st Rebecca HOWARD abt. 1845, b. 1823 MS, then Elizabeth WILLIAMS 19 Jan. 1847 in Citronelle. The Rootsweb site has him born in SC.
  • William b. 1815
  • Sarah b. 6 August 1817 married Ervin/Irvin CRABTREE. The Rootsweb site has her born in GA.
  • Catherine b. 1820 married a Mr. CAIN
  • Ransom D. b. 1822 AL d. 26 June 1900 AL. m. “Rhody” according to 1850 census. The Rootsweb site gives this as Rhoda ALLEN. The sit also gives “1888096 Birmingham, AL city directory Ransom D and Mrs.Martha Faggard are listed as grocers at R. D. Faggard and Co.”
  • George Washington b. abt. 1823, d. 187001880, Bosque Co. TX. married abt. 1841 in AL to Martha OVERSTREET b. 1822 SC, d. 1897 in Comanche Co. TX.
  • Sarena b. 1826 is given by the Geocities site. But the above ROOTSWEB site instead has Daniel J. born 1820, dying before 1850, marrying a Sarena.

Amie Akerman wrote me:

Here is what I have on the Faggard’s. This is from William T. Faggard, Jr.of Redding Ca. (Living). He shows George Washington, the son of Daniel, and brother to Sarah (wife to Ervin Crabtree); on www.geocities.com/heartland/1262/faggard John.html, shows a George Faggard b 1839 in Ms., no middle name, as the son of John (brother to Daniel) and does not show George Washington as son of Daniel. *Total Confusion. William T. Faggard, Jr. has a foot note on his family history about Martha Overstreet Faggard, (in a letter from Ira Doyle to Margie Weimer), Ira said. ‘Uncle Alfred told him the name was Ledbetter, not Overstreet, but he (Uncle Alfred?) was 96 years old then.’ **I have not checked this out. I know on William, Jr’s website on the “Faggard”s every one is trying to track down Martha Overstreet Faggard’s parents. I do not show Martha as one of Jacob and Elizabeth OVERSTREET’s children; my guess would be she could possibly be the sister of Jacob, b.1802 but that would make her much older than George Washington. She could also be a niece to Jacob, because there are a lot of Martha’s in the Overstreet family.

On to the census.

NOTE: According to this there was 1 male under five in the house (b. after 1825, this is probably Haynes Crabtree b. 1829), 1 male between 5 and 10 (b. between 1820 and 1825, this would be Alfred R. b. 1822), 1 male of ten and under 15 (b. between 1815 and 1820, this would be Jackson b. 1817), 1 male of 15 and under 20 (b. between 1810 and 1815, this would be Irvin born 1814), and 1 male of 20 and under 30 (b. between 1800 and 1810). Two males between 30 and 40 (b. between 1790 and 1800). The 3 young females are all given as being under five so born between 1825 and 1830. Then there is one born 1820 to 1825 and an adult female of 40 and under 50. Louisa is perhaps the female given as born between 1820 and 1825, though an 1850 census places her as born abt. 1818. Millay or Milley is one of the females under 5, an 1850 census having her born 1826. Littleton Crabtree would be one of the two males in the 30 to 40 category, and Rebecca COX is likely the female in the 40 to 50 category.

Ervin CRABTREE is seen as Evin or Ewin in the 1840 Mississippi Newton County Census. He appears to be living next door to his father, Littleton. Two more houses down is Daniel OVERSTREET, and further down is a James OVERSTREET. James is perhaps a brother of John OVERSTREET, grandfather of Margaret OVERSTREET, who married Samuel Thomas CRABTREE. Her father was Jacob. George Washington FAGGARD married a Martha M. OVERSTREET abt. 1841 AL who was born 1822 in SC.

In the 1850 Alabama Mobile census, Irvin gives himself as 36, so born 1814. NOTE that Sarah Ann gives herself here as 34, born about 1815 rather than 1819.

In the 1850 Alabama Mobile census, Milley, 14, and Murphy, 19, are living with the CHAMPENOIS. Louisa CRABTREE married Isaac and is the Louise in the household.

Daniel died in 1845 from the stab wound. Jackson was the son of Littleton and Rebecca Cox Crabtree.”
